The Tamil Nadu Dr.M.G.R.Medical University started functioning from July 1988. It is situated in the southern part of the city of Chennai in Tamil Nadu. It is one of the premier Medical Universities of India, named after the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, late Dr.M.G.Ramachandran (M.G.R). It is the second largest Health Sciences University in India. This is the only Medical University in Tamil Nadu capable of granting affiliation to new medical and paramedical colleges, government or self - financing; and awarding degrees.
Besides Medical and Paramedical courses, the University also regulates dental education and education in the Indian systems of medicine to maintain uniform and high standards of education. The University also promotes research. It helps in providing instructions and training in the field of medical sciences.
The Tamil Nadu Professional Courses Entrance Examination (TNPCEE) is conducted by Anna University, Chennai on behalf of the Government of Tamil Nadu for candidates who seek admission to all professional courses, including M.B.B.S., B.D.S., B.Pharm, B.P.T., B.O.T., B.Sc.(Nursing) offered by the University. In addition, the All India Pre-Medical/Pre Dental entrance examination is conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education for admission to 15% of the total seats for Medical and Dental courses in all colleges under this University.
The Medical Informatics Centre of the University updates the knowledge and introduces new technologies among the medical fraternity. The services provided are extremely useful to doctors, research scholars, scientists and para-medical students. More than 2000 students and research scholars are using these facilities.
