Tamilnadu Agricultural University is a leading agro-technology provider of India. Its graduates are recognized throughout the world. Though the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) came into being in 1971, it had its genesis from the establishment of an Agricultural School at Saidapet, Chennai.
Ten undergraduate and twenty nine postgraduate programs are offered in the eleven colleges of the University. The colleges are located in different cities of the state like Madurai, Trichy, and Coimbatore. There are two affiliated colleges of TNAU offering undergraduate programs: Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru College of Agriculture and Research Institute, Karaikal, Pondicherry, and Adhiparasakthi Agricultural College, Kalavai, Vellore District.
Some of the important undergraduate programs offered are: B.Sc.(Agriculture), B.Sc.(Horticulture), B.Sc.(Forestry), B.Sc.(Home Science), B.Tech.(Agriculture Biotechnology), B.Tech.(Food Process Engineering), B.Tech.(Energy and Environmental Engineering), and B.Tech.(Bioinformatics). Postgraduate programs are also offered by all the faculties.
Recently, TNAU has expanded its functions by introducing Open and Distance Learning, which is the first of its kind in India among State Agricultural Universities. The Directorate of Open and Distance Learning was started during April 2005. This Directorate has started offering certificate courses, PG Diploma and PG Degree courses through Distance Learning Mode for those aspiring for self employment opportunities.
TNAU library is the oldest in the city functioning since 1910. It has acquired about 160,000 books, monographs, 17,000 text and reference books and 4,500 theses and dissertations. The Educational Media Center helps produce video programs on Agriculture and allied fields for telecast through TV channels. It also produces Agricultural video lessons for the benefit of farmers and extension personnel.
