St. Xavier’s College, Palayamkottai, is an autonomous and grant-in-aid college, under Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tamil Nadu. It was established in the year 1923 with just 25 students. It is now recognized by the UGC.
The college offers 36 program options in terms of Degrees, Diplomas and Certificates. Several departments of the college are engaged in extensive research and extension activities and are providing necessary support and guidance to M.Phil and Ph.D. scholars. The college has produced a large number of PhDs and has completed several research projects of considerable national importance. The curriculum is framed with seven components – Languages & Foundation Course, Outreach Programs, Extra-departmental courses, Core supportive courses, Core Courses, Core Special Courses and Core Applied courses. 12 of the 36 programs are self-financed.
Faculty committees of each department informally assess the aptitude of students admitted at the beginning of every academic year. A one-day program of “Discover Oneself” is arranged for finding the innate talents. Computer literacy, English proficiency and Bridge courses are offered to needy students. Some departments such as Accountancy, Mathematics and English conduct remedial courses.
The college has established nine research centers in Biosciences and one each in Mathematics, Folklore and Tamil for promoting research. The college extends active support for research work. Apart from providing funds, the college confers annual research awards to teachers for organizing conferences and seminars. Students of certain departments such as Computer Science, Physics, Botany, Economics, English and Commerce are encouraged to do research by way of dissertation. Financial support is extended to select students.
