St. Thomas College of Arts and Science, Chennai was founded by St. Thomas Orthodox Cathedral Parish, Chennai, which is part of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. The Church has its headquarters at Kottayam, Kerala with worldwide parishes in several countries including U.S.A., Canada, U.K., Australia & Germany. The Malankara Orthodox Church, the oldest of its kind in India founded by apostle St. Thomas, runs Engineering Colleges, Colleges of Arts and Sciences, orphanages, and other service institutions. The College is governed by St. Thomas Orthodox Syrian Cathedral Parish Trust.
The College is approved by the Government of Tamil Nadu and affiliated to the University of Madras to offer three year Degree Courses and two year PG Courses. The college has various schools offering different study programs. These schools are School of Information Technology (offering B.Sc. Computer Science, Bachelor of Computer Applications, and M.Sc. Computer Science); School of Media (offering B.Sc. Visual Communication, B.Sc. Electronic Media, and M.Sc. Electronic Media); School of Business (offering Bachelor of Business Administration and Bachelor of Commerce); School of Mathematical Science (offering B.Sc. Mathematics); School of Social Science (offering B.Sc. Psychology).
The extension activities of the students of the college include NSS, Red Cross and Rotaract Club The community development programs organized by the NSS units include blood donation camps, tree plantations, and awareness programs on AIDS, and child labor. The students and teachers are encouraged to participate in the extension activities by extending monetary and non- monetary benefits. Some of the extension activities are undertaken in collaboration with NGOs.
