Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Maha Vidyalaya College of Arts and Science, Coimbatore is affiliated to the Bharathiar University. The autonomous status of the college has given freedom to decide its own curriculum and frame the courses for the students, to arrange for the instructions and conduct examinations on its own. The college follows a well organized system of teaching, learning and evaluation. The students are selected for admissions to various courses through a combination of special entrance tests, interviews and their academic records.
The college has successfully introduced scheme of vocationalisation in the departments of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The History of Tamil literature is offered as a paper under Part I to First year UG students, imparting the knowledge of ancient culture and language of the region. Similarly, the paper on Cultural Heritage of India is offered as a paper under Part II English. Thus, the students are oriented to the regional culture and language as well as the national culture.
Apart from the conventional classroom teaching, students are given assignments and seminars to increase their learning and communication skills. The thrust on compulsory practical component in both Arts and Science faculties is appreciable. The language laboratory of the English Department helps in further enhancing the communication skills of the students. A component of project work with an emphasis on the regional problems also helps the students to get the feel of interaction with various sections of the society. To this end, the Social work Department undertakes programs pertaining to Family Planning, Population Education, and Adult Education.
