The Providence College for Women was established in 1966 in the mountainous area of the Nilgiris in Tamil Nadu. The College is located at Coonoor. This is a Catholic minority institution promoting the cause of women’s education among the backward classes. The College, however, attracts students from urban areas and from abroad. The Management of the Society strives hard and works towards achieving holistic development of personality in women. The College is a purely undergraduate, grant-in-aid multi-faculty institution affiliated to Bharathiar University, Coimbatore.
There are only 2 program options, undergraduate and BDMS. 3 UG programs are offered in Arts, Commerce and Science. The Science Faculty has 3 departments (Mathematics, Botany and Ancillary subjects such as Physics, Chemistry and Zoology). The Arts Faculty has 3 departments (History, Economics and English Literature). The departments of Tamil, Hindi, French and Physical Education are under other faculty. In addition, the College conducts 2 short term courses in computer literacy and fashion designing.
Each department organizes seminars and conducts co-curricular activities that provide practical exposure to the theoretical knowledge acquired in the classroom. Occasional visits to industries, stock exchange, banks, news paper offices, etc. are also conducted. Study tours are also conducted periodically. The members of the faculty are required to submit Self-Appraisal Reports annually.
The college has a variety of extension activities involving students in community development through NSS. The college is involved in organizing camps to bring awareness about issues of women’s health. NSS and sports students arrange rallies, blood donation camps, health awareness camps, and raise funds for national calamities.
