The Madras Medical College is located in Chennai. It was established on February 2nd, 1835 and is one of the oldest medical schools of India. The first batches of students graduated in 1852 and were granted the Diploma of Graduate of the Madras Medical College. In 1857, it gained affiliation to the University of Madras. After the affiliation in 1857 the College moved to be a center of excellence imparting training in all the specialties in the field of medicine and surgery. It is now one of the premier institutions in the country with under graduate, post graduate and super specialty courses.
The various undergraduate degrees offered are: MBBS, Bachelor of Pharmacy, Basic B.Sc. Nursing, and Post B.Sc. Nursing. Postgraduate degrees are offered in General Medicine, Anesthesiology, Biochemistry, Dermatology, Forensic Medicine, Geriatric Medicine, Microbiology, Pediatrics, Pathology, Pharmacology, Physiology, Radiodiagnosis, Radiotherapy, Tuberculosis & Chest Disease, Anatomy, General Surgery, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, and Pharmacy. Postgraduate super specialty courses are offered in Neurology, Cardiology, Rheumatology, Gastro Enterology, Nephrology, Cardio Thoracic Surgery, Genito Urinary Surgery, Neuro Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery, and Vascular Surgery.
The Hospital has a reputation of being one of the best in the state and ranks among the top ten in the Indian Subcontinent. Some wards of the hospital in the main block, which are more than a century old, were demolished and in their place there are the massive “Twin Towers”. Each Tower block has seven floors. These tower blocks have state of art facilities for patient care and medical education.
