Lady Doak College is a premier Christian Institution and the first Women's College in Madurai. It was the brainchild of Ms. Katie Wilcox, an American missionary with a vision and fervor for women empowerment. In 1978, it was commissioned to function as an autonomous college, being affiliated to the Madurai Kamaraj University. The college presently functions as a unit of Katie Wilcox Education Association and stands distinguished as one of the pioneering autonomous colleges in India.
The college offers the following aided and self-financed courses: Bachelor of Arts (B.A) in History, Social Sciences, Economics (English & Tamil Medium), English Literature and Tamil Literature; Bachelor of Science inMathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Botany (Industrial Microbiology) and Zoology (Biotechnology); Master of Arts (M.A.)English Literature, Tamil Literature, History and Economics; Master of Science (M.Sc)in Mathematics and Zoology (Spl. in Genetics; Doctoral Research in Biological Sciences, andPost Graduate Diploma in Bio Molecular Modeling & Dynamics. A pass in the Higher Secondary Course or its equivalent is essential for admission to undergraduate courses. For postgraduate courses, candidates must pass B.A. / B.Sc. (Special) or B.com examination.
There are various extra-curricular activities at this college. The Tamil Literary Cluborganizes competitions like Quiz, Essay Writing, Verse Writing, Short Story writing, Skit, and Elocution. Special lectures are arranged by resource persons from the departments and outside college. In the Sophis Club (Social Sciences), guest speakers are invited to speak on special issues relevant to the subjects. Paper presentations, debates, quiz, and panel discussions are arranged. Interesting games are organized to promote leadership skills.
