L.R.G. Govt. Arts College for Women Tirupur, Tamil Nadu, was started in July, 1971. The college has completed thirty-five years of service in disseminating higher education to the students of Tirupur. The institution, which is a government college, is affiliated to the Bharathiar University, Coimbatore. The College is recognized by the UGC.
The college offers 12 Undergraduate programs and 3 Postgraduate programs; seven of these programs are self-financing programs. The college has faculty representation in the University Boards of Studies for English, History, Mathematics, Physics, Zoology and Botany. They are involved in contributing to the development of curricula. A certificate course on Computer Literacy, mandated by Tamil Nadu State government, is offered to all 1st year students in addition to their regular courses. The college offers core and elective options both at the under-graduate and post-graduate levels. Women related topics are included in the postgraduate programs in Tamil.
The extension activities of the students of the college are centered on NSS, Red Cross and Rotaract Club. Four staff members are appointed as Program officers for training the student volunteers. The community development programs organized by the NSS units include blood donation camps, tree plantations, and awareness programs on AIDS, population, child labor, and rain water harvesting.
Students are required to submit assignments and to participate in unit tests, seminars, group discussions, etc. Assignments and unit tests are evaluated and the marks awarded form the basis of continuous internal assessment of students. The college conducts tutorial classes for the students on difficult topics, especially for Part II English.
