Coimbatore Medical College is a Government Institution under the Director of Medical Education. It was established in 1966. The Government Head Quarters Hospital is attached to the college and is converted into a teaching Medical Institution. The college is recognized by Medical Council of India and s affiliated to Tamil Nadu Dr M G R Medical University. The college has more than 30 departments which offer Preclinical courses and Elective Postings.
Both undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs are offered. The various subjects that are taught include General Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pathology, Microbiology, Physiology, Pharmacology, Pediatrics, Radio Diagnosis, Radio Therapy, Anesthesiology, Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Biochemistry, Forensic Medicine, Community Medicine, Geriatric Medicine, Tuberculosis & Respiratory Diseases, Psychiatry, Immuno-Hematology &Blood Transfusion, and Dermatology.
The Tamilnadu Dr. M.G.R Medical University regularly organizes workshops, seminars, and CME Programs for students in all faculties. National Service Scheme activities have been started from the year 1991-92 onwards. 40 N.S.S. Units have been allocated. Students are involved in conducting awareness programs on public health , family, planning, Hygiene, Leprosy, AIDS, improvement of status of women, smoking, dowry, alcoholism, drug addiction, awareness of nutritional diet and remedies for minor ailments.
The students of the college make use of the Regional Medical Library. There are 21,979 books in the library in addition to 169 International Journals for students’ reference. The Library also offers reference services of dissertations (submitted by the students) and question papers (for all the University Examinations). The Library conducts book exhibitions every year and invites Publishers to introduce new books in the field of Medicine
