The Christian Medical College, Vellore is a 2234 bed multi-specialty, tertiary care teaching hospital. It was established in 1918 by Dr.Ida Scudder. CMC has been given a five star rating by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council, in recognition of its quality of medical education and health care. CMC has been consistently ranked among the best medical colleges in India. Independent surveys published in 2006 rank CMC second in the overall survey of the best medical colleges in India, next only to AIIMS Delhi.
Each year 60 students, of which at least 25 are women, are admitted for undergraduate medical course. The churches who are members of the council sponsor students for different courses. The college within its affiliation to the TN Dr MGR Medical University, Chennai offers degree courses in Medicine (MBBS), Nursing (BSc), Physio-therapy (BPT), Occupational Therapy (BOT) and in Medical Laboratory Technology (BSc). The MBBS course is of four and a half year's and is followed by one year of Compulsory Rotating Residential Internship. The course is taken in three stages, following a short foundation course which provides basic principles of Communication, Ethics and Problem Based Learning.
Christian Medical College, Vellore also welcomes foreign students who like to spend an elective period in the institution. Elective students are posted to clinical units of their choice. They participate in ward rounds, clinics, demonstrations, lectures and seminars. Many overseas students are interested to see primary health care in rural setting and this is arranged by the departments of Community Health and Development (CHAD) and Rural Unit for Health and Social Affairs (RUHSA).
