Bharathiar University is a postgraduate university in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. in 1985, the University received recognition from the University Grants Commission (U.G.C.) New Delhi, which made the University eligible to receive U.G.C. grants. The University has under its jurisdiction 119 affiliated institutions (80 Arts and Science Colleges, 29 Colleges of Education, 8 Management Institutions, 1 Air Force Administration College and 1 College of Physical Education).
The following postgraduate courses are offered here: M.A. Tamilology, M.A. Computational Linguistics, M.A. Sociology, M.A. Population Studies, M.Sc. Mathematics, M.Sc. Medical Physics, M.Sc. Chemistry, M.Sc. Bio-informatics, M.Sc. Animal Science, M.Sc. Advanced Communication Systems, M.Sc. Biotechnology, M.B.A, and M.Sc. Electronic Media. The graduation requirements for all these courses are different, depending upon the subject.
The University, with a view to encourage motivated young scholars to pursue Ph.D. programs, awards 26 University Research Fellowships. For admission to these programs, candidates should have passed 2 year PG Course after 3 year Bachelor Degree course and Higher Secondary Course of 2 year duration. A number of scholarships are available for SC/ST candidates admitted to the M.Phil / Ph.D. full time programs in the University.
The University has set up a College Development Council (CDC) during 1985-86, with financial assistance from the UGC. Its main aim is to draw plans to effectively execute and coordinate the developmental activities of the affiliated colleges and institutions. It strives to promote well structured and well planned undergraduate and postgraduate programs in the colleges. It also plays a constructive role in developing the infrastructural facilities in the colleges.
