Bharath Institute of Science and Technology (BIST) was established by the Sri Lakshmi Ammal Educational Trust, with the aim of imparting higher knowledge in Science and Technology. BIST was started in the year 1984, and acquired deemed to be University status in the year 2003 by University Grants Commission (UGC). It has also been approved by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE).
Undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs are offered in a variety of disciplines. Some of the important disciplines are: Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering, Bio - Medical Engineering, Telecommunication Engineering, Information Technology, Digital Communication and Networking, Marine Engineering, Architecture, Interior Design, Logistics Management, Software Engineering, and Construction Engineering & Management. Admissions for undergraduate and postgraduate courses are done through All India Entrance Examination.
The Central Library has a collection of books around 75,000 and subscribes to 80 periodicals and journals. The service is fully computerized. Computer terminals are available for searching the library catalogue and for making reservation for books. Digital library facilities, CD-ROMs, books and audio-visual materials on a variety of study areas are available.
The university has collaborations with academic institutions as well as leading industries and organizations. Each Department arranges seminars, guest lectures and visits to various industries. Efforts are being made to sign MOUs with more universities at home and abroad. The college conducts special literary camps, adult education programs, health camps, and blood donation camps with the help of NSS and NCC units. The college also provides opportunities to participate in organized sports and recreational activities.
