The Utkal University of Culture, the first of its type in India, was established in 1999. The University has been duly recognized by the University Grants Commission and has been granted membership by the Association of Indian Universities. The University provides facilities and opportunities for graduate, post-graduate, doctorate and post-doctorate education in various spheres of culture including language, literature, visual arts, performing arts architecture, folklore and tribal studies, by instruction, training, and research.
The university has established the following Schools: School of Architecture & Archaeology, School of Language and Literature, School of Visual Arts, School of Performing Arts, School of Culture Studies, School of Orissan Studies, and School of Occupational Studies. The university has instituted the following under-graduate degree courses of 3 year duration: Tourism and Hospitality Services, Textile design, Interior Design, Fashion Design, Fine Arts, Computer-aided Graphic Arts, and Music. Post-graduate degree and diploma courses are also offered. For admission to these, candidates must be graduates of any recognized university with at least 50% marks in the aggregate in the three-year degree or equivalent examination.
The University has undertaken the publication of research books and reprints of rare books of importance in the fields of culture. Besides, the University publishes a bulletin called Sanskruti. To provide facilities and opportunities for the students, researchers, and scholars, the Utkal University of Culture organizes workshops, seminars, symposia, public lectures, round-table discussions, and conferences in various spheres of culture. The University plans to become a comprehensive center of excellence in all matters relating to culture and cultural ideas.
