University College of Pharmacy, Berhampur is affiliated to the Berhampur University. It offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs. The college has been approved by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India and the Pharmacy Council of India under the Pharmacy Act, 1948. The Council is responsible for prescription, regulation, and maintenance of minimum educational standards for the training and registration of pharmacists throughout the country. The Council prescribes syllabus rules and regulations for Diploma, Graduate, and Postgraduate courses.
For the Master’s degree courses, candidates must have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Pharmaceutical Sciences. The overall aggregate should be at least 60 percent; the student can also apply for the course if he is awaiting his final year results. GATE qualified candidates are generally preferred by the institute. After M.Pharma, one may register himself for Ph.D in some institutes or universities.
An aspirant, after passing class 12th, can opt for D.Pharma or B.Pharma, either with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics or with Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Both streams of students can join the above courses. Pharmacy education is a two-tier system; D.Pharma, a basic course in Pharmacy is of two years duration, while B.Pharma is a four years Degree course in Pharmacy. After completing D.Pharma, one may directly take admission in the Bachelor’s Degree on the basis of lateral entry. Admission to these courses is done merit, which is obtained in the entrance exams conducted along with various medical college entrance exams in all the states.
