Unit 1 High School is situated in the capital city of Orissa, Bhubaneswar. It is a government funded high school. The school attempts to provide a well-rounded education to students by allocating liberal time and resources for arts, crafts and games, an aspect sorely lacking in many Indian schools.
The students take part in a number of extra-curricular activities. The annual prize distribution ceremony sees one or more plays enacted by the students as well as other cultural programs. During the year, other smaller cultural programs take place in the school at various occasions. The school also holds an Annual Athletic Meet.
In recent times, the school has suffered from a shortage of funds. Earlier, the school used to have some great infrastructure, including a Science Laboratory where physics experiments were demonstrated for the students. Unexpectedly, there has been a crisis of funds in the interim and the infrastructure has suffered as a result. The laboratory and the equipment have disappeared in 1980s and 90s.
However, with some teamwork, some of the alumni of the school have expressed their concerns and willingness to help. They have decided to get a Science Laboratory up and running for US$10,000.00. Other infrastructural facilities will also be taken care of. The funding for the laboratory is being managed by Jagannath organization for Global Awareness (JOGA). One of its missions is to support educational projects in Orissa.
