Training Centre for Teachers of the Visually Handicapped (TCTVH) is running in collaboration with the NIVH, the Training Centre for the Mentally Handicapped. It is located in Bhubaneswar, Orissa. The Institute conducts long-term as well as short term training programs for various professionals engaged in the service for the blind. These training courses are also meant for the benefit of Primary and Secondary school teachers in the state.
The institute conducts a one-year program recognized by the Rehabilitation council of India and supported by the Christoffel Blindon Mission, Germany. It offers a diploma that aims to train aspiring teachers to become special teachers for the visually impaired. Each batch comprises of 20 students. The course has inputs from international teachers and experts.
The institute also provides rehabilitation services to the rural-based visually handicapped persons through its community based rehabilitation activities. The activities range from special to integrated education, from prevention of blindness and disability to vocational training and commercial production. Various aids and appliances like Braille slate, Taylor Frame, Abacus, Stylus, Chess Board, Playing Cards, Pocket Frame, Folding Stick, Braille Scale, Geo Boards, Diagram Boards, and Braille Shorthand Machine are being manufactured.
The Institute's Braille Press is producing reading material in Braille for the use of blind readers. There is a Braille Library for the use of students. Vocational Training is provided to blind students. It also provides guidance and counseling to school children, trainees of training centers and to the parents of the visually handicapped.
