Samanta Chandra Sekhar College is an autonomous College under Utkal University. It was founded in July 1944 in Puri, Orissa. The college was named after Samanta Chandra Sekhar, a luminary in the field of Astronomical Science.
The college offers Under Graduate courses in Arts (Economics, Geography, Hindi, Logic, Mathematics, Oriya, Political Science, Psychology, Sanskrit, and Statistics); Science and Commerce (Botany, Chemistry, Physics, Accountancy, Business Organization, Commercial Law); Computer Science. Postgraduate courses are offered in Commerce, Zoology, and English. The English department has introduced Linguistics as a special paper in M.A. Part II and offers teaching in spoken English (phonetics) and English Language Teaching. A student, after passing +2 or equivalent course, can be eligible to get admitted to the first year of the three year integrated degree in Arts, Science or Commerce.
The departments get financial support from the U.G.C. and the Government for the purchase of equipment, books and journals. They conduct seminars, group discussions of academic interest and publish seminar bulletins. The departments provide library and reading room facilities to students of P.G. and Honors students. The departments also conduct Study Tours to different places of Biological interest and organize extra- mural lecture series on different scientific topics inviting eminent educationists of international repute.
The college provides six hostels, out of which two are women's hostel and remaining four for men students. The college also has a library with about 80,500 books and a reading room. Two advanced and well equipped Computer Centers are available for the students of Computer Science.
