Rama Devi (RD) Women's College is one of the premier women's institutions of Orissa. It started functioning as Government Women's College from the year 1964 in a small building of the Labour Department, Government of Orissa. The College was shifted to the present campus in 1969. It was named after Maa Rama Devi, a great Orissan freedom fighter and a devout Gandhian. In 1995, it became the first Post-Graduate College of the state capital with the opening of M.A. classes in Hindi and Home Science. From the academic session 1999-2000, this institution has been declared by the UGC an Autonomous College.
The autonomous college imparts Postgraduate teaching in Hindi and Home Science, and Honors teaching in English, Oriya, Hindi, Sanskrit, History, Economics, Political Science, Philosophy, Sociology, Mathematics, Accountancy, Management, Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology. Honors in Computer Science is taught as a self financing course. Under the UGC assistance, four vocational subjects namely Clinical Nutrition, Secretarial Practice and Office Management, Food Science & Quality Control, and Industrial Fish & Fisheries are taught at degree level.
The Social Service Guild of the college provides financial assistance to the needy and deserving students of the College. To finance the organization, each student of the college contributes an annual subscription of Rs.2/- towards the Guild fund. The College has a platoon of Girls' N.C.C. in which 90 cadets are enrolled, including 20 cadets of Air Wing and 10 cadets of Remount and Veterinary Wing. The NCC and NSS volunteers of this college have earned name and fame, both within and outside the state.
