Open Learning System, Bhubaneswar is an institute for rehabilitative education. It was established by a group of citizens of Orissa in the year 1987. It works in partnership with strategic organizations at all levels to address the exclusion and marginalization of disabled and vulnerable people. The organization seeks to bring about positive change in the lives of children with disabilities. It also helps in training and supporting local counterparts.
The institute offers a postgraduate, 1 year Diploma in Special Education (Multiple, Disabilities, Physically & Neurological). In order to impart training to the students, The Open Learning System employs qualified Occupational Therapists with a minimum of 2 years’ post-qualification experience, and some experience of working with children, especially children with autism. Students at this institute learn to become more open to local practices and adapting their skills and knowledge to a different cultural context.
Degree or Diploma holders in any discipline and those having passed H.S.C, besides possessing three years work experience, are eligible to join the course. The award of Diploma is based on assessment of the assignments, project report submitted by the learner and performance in the final examination.
Students at the institute also get an opportunity to develop training materials and programs for the assessment of children with different forms of disabilities. They assist the OLS in developing strategies for increased parent involvement in their programs. They learn to organize training sessions and workshops for current therapists, caregivers and special educators to raise awareness about disability issues.
