National Institute of Science & Technology (NIST) is situated in Berhampur, Orissa. This institute was set up and is managed by the SM Charitable Educational Trust with the aim of promoting higher technical education. This is the first engineering college under Berhampur University.
At NIST, four-year degree programs leading to a Bachelor of Technology (BTech.) degree are offered in the following disciplines: Computer Science & Engineering, Electronics and Communications Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering, and Information Technology. The syllabus has been framed by an expert committee appointed by Berhampur University. Technical inputs in this process came from many well-known professors of US universities and the IITs. The syllabus prescribed at NIST is at par with many of the best international universities. The course on "Technical Communication" offered in the first semester is a unique feature of the syllabus. This course has been designed by experts from the English Language Training Institute, Bhubaneswar, one of the premier language institutes of India.
The NIST Technology Consulting Services (NTCS) is an autonomous body in NIST, actively involved in industrial research actives and also offers advanced training programs beyond academic curriculum. The Industrial research activities are focused on applied research, product prototype and development. NTCS also provides consultancy services primarily in the area of information technology, and brings into reality the theoretical research work conducted by faculty members. Each of the projects undertaken by NTCS is led by a faculty member.
