Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology (Formerly Orissa College of Engineering) came in to existence in the year 1982. It is located in Sarang, Orissa. Initially, the institution was managed directly by the Government of Orissa. Thereafter, the institution came under the management of a registered autonomous society.
The institute offers the following courses leading to Bachelor Degree in Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Mechanical and Metallurgy and Material Engineering; Diploma in Civil, Electrical, Electronics and Telecommunication, Mechanical and Metallurgical Engineering; 3 years course of Master in Computer Application (MCA). Besides the above, 4 years part time evening Diploma course in Electrical & Mechanical Engineering has been started under continuing education program from the session 1995-96.
The institute is fully residential with hostel facilities and a sprawling playground with a basketball court. The indoor badminton court-cum-gymnasium building is like to be constructed soon. The institute has well-developed laboratories. It has central library and a Computer Center with IBM Infinity 5000 server and a number of PCs Besides the central computational facilities, mini systems are also available in each department. An integrated Rural Energy Planning Program (IREP) Technical Backup unit has been established in the Institute by the Planning Commission of India.
Campus selection of students is conducted regularly by firms like Infosys, BFL, Patni Computer Systems, Tata Consultancy Services, Larsen & Turbo Ltd., and Tata Refractories Ltd. In order to provide complete exposure to industrial life, the students are taken to nearby organizations such as NALCO, N.T.P.C., Rengali Dam Project, Samal Barrage, Heavy Water Project etc. on weekends and holidays.
