Government College, Bhawanipta started as Kalahandi Science College in 1960. It was taken over by the Government of Orissa in 1961. It then became known as Govt. Science College, Bhawanipatna. The College is situated in the KBK (Kalahandi-Bolangir-Koraput) region, one of the most backward regions of the country. The college enjoys the status of “College with Potential for Excellence “(CPE), along with 47 such colleges of the nation.
Courses offered at undergraduate level are: Economics, History, Mathematics, Oriya, Geography, Sanskrit, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Botany, Zoology, Computer Science, Accounting, and Management. Postgraduate courses are offered in most of these disciplines as well. Other courses offered are PG. Diploma in Information and Computer Technology, Certificate course in Computer Application, BFC (Bachelor in Finance and Control), PG Diploma in Pathology Laboratory Technology, M.Phil (Oriya), and M.Phil (History). A candidate is for the admission process, if he has passed the qualifying Higher Secondary or equivalent examination from an institution recognized by CHSE, Orissa.
There are three hostels for the accommodation for students of the college. The college library is meant for general use by all the members of the staff and students of the college. Some departments also have seminar libraries with more useful books under the charge of a member of the department.
Students having genuine interest in social work are selected and enrolled in N.S.S. as the scheme is based on voluntary service. Programs under the scheme include construction of work projects like building and repair or roads, renovation and cleaning of tanks and wells, education, adult literacy, social education, etc.
