Government Homeopathic Medical College is located in Berhampur, Orissa. It is also known as Co-operative Homeopathic Medical College. The college is affiliated to Berhampur University.
The duration of the Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery course (BHMS) is 5½ years. This duration includes one year of internship. To be eligible for the course, candidates must pass 10+2 (Science) with 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology. At present, the college does not offer postgraduate studies. However, the government is in the process of introducing some other courses as well.
There are many career options open for graduates of homeopathic medicine. Individuals can set up private practice on their own. In addition, they can take up teaching assignments in colleges teaching homoeopathy. Yet another option is to join the ministry of health and family planning under the Government of India or the respective state governments.
As part of the course, students are taught how to take detailed case history including mental, emotional and physical symptoms and characteristics, analyzing each case to select a remedy appropriate for the individual, monitoring and evaluating patient progress, maintaining clinical records, and organizing and promoting good practice. They are taught how to deal with long-term chronic ailments and acute illnesses like 'flu' viruses, coughs and colds. They also learn how to effectively treat all manner of ailments, from childhood illnesses through to people with chronic diseases such as asthma or AIDS, by assessing the whole person, taking into account the overall health condition and nutrition status.
