Government Boys' High School is located in Kendrapara, Orissa. Established in 1865, it is one of the oldest schools in India. This school was one of the many schools that were hit by cyclones in the state of Orissa recently. As a result of the damage caused, the Central Government and UNESCO have been actively involved in the repair work of this school. As a result of their efforts, the school has now started functioning normally.
UNESCO funds are used for supply of books to secondary and senior secondary CBSE and ICSE schools, which includes the Kendrapara Government Boys’ High School. UNICEF is co-coordinating inter-agency efforts with NGOs, SAVE THE CHILD, UK and others. Students are supplied “School-in-a-box Kits" as part of the initiative by UNESCO. These kits include chalk, dusters, reading materials, pencils, glue, stationery, and other items of student use. Teachers’ kits and designing child friendly schools are proposed to be part of the rehabilitation activity.
With the efforts of the various government agencies and NGOs, the school has also started running a School Health Program. As part of this initiative, UNICEF provides ORS packets and contingency funds for running of control rooms during the heatstroke season. The national UN Volunteers are increasing the heat wave preparedness. They assist the government of Orissa in ensuring the success of the heat wave preparedness campaign. In addition, hostels are being constructed for orphaned and separated children.
