Government College, Sundargarh, is a co-educational, urban-based institution affiliated to Sambalpur University. It is recognized by the UGC. It was established in the year 1958 as a private institution, but in the year 1962, the Government of Orissa took over it. Since that time, the college is being funded by the Government. The college is located in the Head-quarters of Sundargarh district, which is adjacent to the borders of Jharkhand and Chattisgarh states.
The college presently offers three Undergraduate Degree programs (Honors & Pass). These are B.A, B.Com, and B.Sc. Postgraduate Degree programs are offered in seven subjects, namely, History, Economics, Political Science, Oriya, Chemistry, Zoology and Botany. The college is considering introducing vocational courses and courses under self financing scheme.
The faculty use maps, OHP and other teaching aids to make the teaching interesting so that the students can understand the subject easily. The students are also provided an opportunity to listen and converse with the subject experts and other scholars invited by the college. Some of the post graduate degree teachers of the college are pursuing research for higher degrees.
The college is involved in various extension activities through NSS, NCC and Red Cross Society. The students participate in community development, health & hygiene awareness, adult education, medical camp, blood donation camps, AIDS and environment awareness etc.
The central library is well equipped with nearly 50,000 books and subscribes to 28 journals and periodicals. There is a computer centre available to students. There are 6 hostels, 4 for boys and 2 for girls with optimum facilities.
