Gopabandhu Ayurveda Mahavidyalaya is situated in Puri, Orissa. It is approved by the University Grants Commission and is affiliated with Utkal University, Bhubaneswar. It is a premier Ayurveda college of Orissa, and was founded in July 1949. The college is under administrative control of Director of Indian Medicines & Homeopathy, Orissa, under the Department of Health & Family Welfare. The college is famous for the well maintained herbal garden in its campus, where uncommon and valuable varieties of medicinal plants are grown.
The various courses that are offered are: Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine & Surgery (41/2 years, 30 seats), M.D. (Ay) in kayachikitsa, M.D.(Ay) in Kaumar bhritya (pediatrics), M.D. (Ay) in Rasasastra & Bhaisajya Kalpana (Pharmacy), M.S. (Ay) in Shalyatantra (surgery), M.S. (Ay) in Shalakyatantra (Eye & E.N.T.), and M.S. (Ay) in Prasutitantra (Obstetrics & Gyn). All the postgraduate programs are of 3 years duration and have 3 seats each. Postgraduate course in Rasashastra has been introduced recently from the academic year 2001-2002. The admission into MD & M.S degrees is made according to the merit list as per the marks obtained in the entrance examination conducted by the college.
The attached hospital provides Panchkarma therapy for some of the most common ailments. Specialized treatment is provided for conditions like Rheumatic Fever, Rheumatic Arthritis, Sciatica, Monoplegia, Hemiplegia, and Paraplegia. Ksharsutra treatment in Osteomyelitis, Piles, Fistula & other anorectic diseases is also offered. Netra Tarpana, a specialized Ayurvedic treatment for Myopia, is available in this hospital.
