The Fakir Mohan University, Vyasa Vihar, is situated in Balasore, Orissa. It was established by the Government of Orissa in 1999. It has also been accredited by the Association of Indian Universities. This University has been carved out of the Utkal University, which earlier had to manage more than 500 colleges at the graduate and postgraduate levels. However, with the foundation of this university, the functioning of Utkal University also became more efficient.
The University started with five Postgraduate departments in frontline subjects. It has now added M. Phil and M. Tech courses, besides courses on Executive MBA. The various disciplines of study that are offered are: Biosciences and Biotechnology, Environmental Science, Information and Communication Technology, and Population Studies. In order to be eligible for admission into any Post-Graduate course, a candidate should have passed three years Degree Examination in Arts/Science/ Commerce of F.M. University, or any examination recognized as equivalent.
The MBA program of Fakir Mohan University started in self-financing mode initially. However, the regular MBA program started in the Department of Business Management during the year 2004-05. Now, the Department of Business Management offers two year full time management program leading to MBA degree. At the end of the first year, each student is required to undergo summer training in any business organization.
To handle Distance Education, the University has a department called Directorate of Distance & Continuing Education (DDCE). This unit offers courses in Information Technology, Fashion Technology, Hotel Management, Biotechnology, and Traditional Science. Selection for admission into different courses is made through a written Entrance Test.
