Berhampur University was established in 1967. The University covers the districts of Ganjam, Koraput, Kandhomal, Gajapati, Rayagda, Nawrangpur & Malkhangiri. The University has 25 affiliated colleges under its jurisdiction. There are twenty post-graduate departments in the university, offering specialized subjects and M. Phil programs. Some of the faculties like Mass Communication, Tourism and Indian Monuments, Electronic Science, Computer Science, Marine Science make the University stand apart from some other universities of the country.
The University has four major faculties. These are: Faculty of Science, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Business, and Faculty of Law. In addition, there are various research centers that function under the university. Some of these are The Women’s Studies Research Centre, Regional Studies Center, Canadian Studies Center, Ocean Science and Technology Cell, and Biju Patnaik Computer Center.
The University offers the following courses: BA in Anthropology, History, Mathematics, Economics, Home Science, Oriya, Education, Political Science, English, Personnel Management, Sanskrit, Hindi, Linguistics, and Telugu. The Commerce department offers B.Com, B.B.A, M.Com and M.B.A. programs. Undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs in Engineering, Law and Medicine are also offered.
At present there are seven hostels in the University campus to provide accommodation to postgraduate and M.Phil students. Apart from these, there is the Jogendra Hostel which accommodates research scholars working in different departments. The Computer Center provides practical training to the students of different P.G. Departments, computation work of faculty and research scholars of the university, and computerization of administrative jobs. The students of PGDCA and MCA courses also use the Computer Centre for practical classes.
