Alaka Mahavidyalaya is situated in Anakhia, in Cuttack district of Orissa. The institution is affiliated to Utkal University, Bhubaneshwar. The college was established in the year 1980. The Utkal University is a teaching-cum-affiliating University, and offers Post-Graduate studies and research in various disciplines of Science, Humanities, Business Administration, Social Science, Law and Commerce. It is the largest affiliating University in the country. The Alaka Mahavidyalaya is one of the 263 affiliated colleges that lie under its jurisdiction.
The Alaka Mahavidyalaya was established with the objective of providing quality education to the vast majority of working and adult learners, and to provide continuing education to all sections of the society through distance or continuing education. The courses offered are Bachelor of Arts (BA) with Honors in History, Political Science, Economics, Sanskrit, Philosophy, Oriya, Education, Sociology, and Statistics. Master of Arts programs are also taught in certain disciplines.
The College Library is completely housed in the campus. The Library caters to the needs of all types of readers by borrowing books, journals, and articles other libraries on Inter-Library loan basis. The institute provides residential facilities to the students. All the hostels are supervised and coordinated by the Warden.
A computer Center has been established for use by the students. It provides Internet connectivity as well. Besides meeting the academic use of the students, the computing facilities have also been used for non-academic purposes by the Orissa State Electricity Board, Rourkela Steel Plant, FCI Talcher Heavy Water Project, Talcher and CRESIDA
