Topiwala National Medical College (TNMC) was opened in 1921. Through a donation by Mr. M.N. Desai Topiwala, the college was upgraded in 1946 and then received recognition for the MBBS course. It was then taken over by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai. Today, with the infrastructure of the 1300 bedded BYL Nair Charitable Hospital behind it, TNMC makes an ideal teaching institute for medical education.
The Medical College provides training courses in more than 25 different medical and allied branches, including 9 super specialty courses. The college has more than 250 senior teaching staff members, who are assisted by 400 resident doctors. The following undergraduate courses are taught here: MBBS, B.Sc. (Physiotherapy), B.Sc. (Occupational Therapy), B.Sc. (Audio-Speech Language Pathology), and Diploma (Nursing). Postgraduate Degree Courses are offered in General Medicine, Pediatrics, Skin & V.D., Pathology, Microbiology, Radiology, Psychiatry, Physiology, Pharmacology, Anesthesia, and Forensic Medicine.
The associated hospital has some unique treatment facilities. Some of these facilities include: Cancer Radiotherapy Centre, UVB & PUVA Therapy for Skin Diseases,
Phaco-emulsification for Cataract, SPECT Camera & Nuclear Medicine Unit, Therapeutic Drug Monitoring for Epilepsy, Sleep Laboratory, School Mental Health Clinic, Audio-Speech Therapy Services, and Color Doppler. There is a Research Center which sponsors various scientific conferences, medical workshops & a number of symposia.
The institute campus has separate hostels for boys and girls. The library is fully computerized and provides bibliographic and reference services. Internet facilities are also provided for students. There are ample facilities for sports and recreation also.
