King Edward Memorial Hospital and Seth Gordhandas Sunderdas Medical College is amongst is one of the foremost teaching and medical care providing institutions in India. It was established in 1926. The institute is funded mainly by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai.
The undergraduate courses that are offered are MBBS (180 seats), Occupational therapy (BOTh.), Physiotherapy (BPTh), Dental (BDS), Ayurveda (BAMS), Unani (BUMS), Homeopathy (BHMS), Pharmacy (BPharm), and Audiology (MASLP). In addition, a large number of postgraduate degree and diploma courses are also taught here. The Seth Gordhandas Sunderdas Medical College provides training to about 2000 students in undergraduate, postgraduate and super specialty medical courses. A nursing school is also maintained by these institutions.
Government of Maharashtra conducts a Common Entrance Test for Health Science courses.
The 1800 bedded hospital treats about 1.8 million out-patients and 68,000 in-patients annually, and provides advanced treatment facilities in all fields of medicine and surgery. A variety of diagnostic and interventional surgical, laparoscopic and endoscopic procedures are performed. The surgery department has two operation theatres, four operating tables for elective (JMT) and three operating tables for emergency (MOT) work. Apart from these, there is a minor surgery theatre available in the casualty ward.
All the departments have a very active teaching schedule for residents. Besides conducting refresher courses; there are also opportunities for observership for those from other parts of the state and country. Various departments of the institute offer short term courses. These include Certificate Courses in Emergency Medicine, Cardiac anesthesia, Good Clinical Laboratory Practices, and Medical Education Technology.
