Vaidyaratnam P S Varier Ayurveda College

Vaidyaratnam PS Varier Ayurveda College (AVS) is situated in Kottakkal, Kerala. It is a century old charitable institution engaged in the practice and propagation of Ayurveda, the ancient health care system of India. The college offers classical Ayurvedic medicines and authentic Ayurvedic treatments to patients from all over India and abroad. Started essentially as a village clinic, it has now grown into a multi-unit, multi-disciplinary organization. It manages Ayurvedic Hospitals at Kottakkal, Delhi and Kochi.

All classical Ayurvedic medicines, therapies and expert medical advice are available here. AVS has two modern medicine manufacturing units, well equipped quality control labs, and full-fledged research activities. AVS also runs a Kathakali academy where the classical theatre of Kathakali is taught and performed. The college runs an undergraduate program in Ayurvedic Medicine. The course leads to the award of the degree of Calicut University.

Many special treatments prescribed in the ancient medical classics for some of the most distressing diseases are taught to students. The major treatments provided at the hospital are: Snehapanam Dhara, Pizhichil, Navarakkizhi, Sirovasti, Pichu and Sirolepa. Besides these specialized methods, the hospital offers Panchakarma treatments like Kashayavasthy, Snehavasthy, Nasyam, Virechanam and Raktamoksham.

The college is also a research institute. For cancer-related research, a package of innovative Ayurvedic medicines is being tried out; the data thus generated is being analyzed by a special unit set up for this purpose. Arya Vaidya Sala is also carrying out a study for evolving appropriate therapeutic procedures for rheumatoid and osteoarthritis. A new research project has been initiated on the management of diabetes.
