University of Calicut

The University of Calicut, the second university to be set up in Kerala, came into being in 1968 with the objective of developing human resources in the northern districts of Kerala. The University made the beginning by taking into its fold the four postgraduate departments set up by the University of Kerala at Calicut, and 54 constituent colleges. Currently, as many as 262 colleges are affiliated to the University.

The University offers Certificate Courses, Degree Courses, P.G. Courses (Degree and Diploma) and research degrees (M.Phil and Ph.D). Some of the subjects that are taught are Arabic, Botany, Chemistry, Economics, Education, English, Hindi, History, Mathematics, Philosophy, Physics, Psychology, Sanskrit, and Zoology. Some of the Master’s courses offered are M.Com (Commerce), M.B.A (Business Administration), M.C.J (Communication and Journalism), M.L.I.Sc (Library and Information Science) and M.Ed. (Education).

The Calicut University Library has a collection of about 95,000 books and subscribes to 218 Journals and 10 Newspapers. It follows the Anglo American cataloguing Rules II for cataloguing. The library also compiles bibliographies of different types. The library provides reference services, information services, and reprography services. The Internet Centre in the Library caters to the information needs of the campus community.

The Students’ Trap on the main campus at Thenjipalam, is the centre of campus life activities. A beautifully laid out open space between the. Central Library and the University Park, it has all the facilities for a free time hang out: a books and souvenir shop, Cyber Spot and a cafeteria. At times, evenings here turn musical and colorful with artistic performances.
