Govt. Arts College

Government Arts College is located in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. It was established in the year 1948. The college is affiliated to University of Kerala. It is one of the oldest and most prestigious educational institutions in the state. Out of 706 distinctions in the Pre-Degree Examinations of March 1998 alone, the Government Arts College secured 173. The college comes under the purview of the Department of Technical Education.

Chartered in 1866 by the then Maharaja of Travancore as a division of University College, the institution has a long history. It was bifurcated in 1924, and amalgamated with the University College again in 1942. The institution has won the R. Sankar Award for the best performance in sports and games two times in a row since its inception.

Courses offered include Bachelor in Arts (BA) in Economics, Bachelor in Commerce (BCom), Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Physics, Master of Arts (MA) in English and Economics, Master in Commerce (MCom), and Master of Science in Analytical Chemistry. The BA Economics and B.Com degree programs were started in 1971. The college has recently been faced with the problem of delinking of the Pre-Degree. Because of this, the management is thinking of starting restructured graduate and post graduate courses.

The College Union, the two wings of N.C.C.(Army & Navy), the three units of National Service Scheme ACERS (Arts College Rhetoric Society), and various Science Clubs provide a platform for talented students to develop their skills in extracurricular activities. The Parent-Teacher Association renders help to the Principal in the developmental activities.
