The Government College of Engineering, Kannur was established in 1986 as a centre for imparting quality engineering education in northern Kerala. It is a state-sponsored engineering college affiliated to Kannur University, Kerala. The college has an annual intake of only 300 students (under five 4-year graduate courses), on merit basis through the All Kerala Common Entrance Examination.
The engineering departments of the college include electrical & electronics, civil, mechanical, electronics & communications and computer science. In addition, the college has some non-engineering departments: Department Of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Economics, Geology and Physical Education. All the engineering branches offer four-year Bachelor of Technology courses. The departments are frequently visited by firms like Larson& Toubro, Public Works Department, Indian Railways, and some of the big firms in the IT industry. The Electronics department is actively involved with organizations like Vikram Sarabhai space centre, CEDIT-Kozhikode, Technopark-Trivandrum, Keltron- Kannur and ITI- Palakkad. These liaisons help students prepare their graduation projects and get industrial training.
The Training and Placement Cell conducts seminars, group discussions, and mock interviews as a part of career guidance and personality development. Companies like Infosys, CTS, Satyam and HCL InfoTech are invited for recruitment. The college has an active Parent Teacher Association that fosters good relationships among the members of the staff, students and parents. The National Service Scheme (NSS) provides opportunities to students to use their spare time in community service. Every NSS volunteer is expected to engage himself in NSS activities for 240 hours, inclusive of a special camp for 10 days duration. |
