Government Ayurveda College

The Government Ayurveda College campus is located at Puthiyakavu, in Ernakulam district of Kerala. Its hospital serves the health needs of Ernakulam and neighboring districts. Since 1929, the college has produced a number of medical personnel of high caliber in different fields like research, education and clinical practice. The college is affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam.

The course offered by this college Tripunithura is B.A.M.S (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery). It is a degree course recognized by Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM), which is the authorized monitoring agency for education in Indian systems of medicine. The committee appointed by CCIM visits the college periodically reviews the standard before renewing the recognition. The course is designed in three modules: I Professional course 18 months, II Professional course 18 months, and III Professional course 18 months. The total duration is 4½ years plus one year of internship.

The course is imparted through theoretical and practical instruction in the pre clinical and clinical branches of Ayurveda. Since Sanskrit is the language in which most of the classical works were written, working knowledge in Sanskrit is essential for easy understanding of Ayurveda. Therefore, there is instruction in Sanskrit in the first professional course followed by an examination at the end.
