The Gujarat University is the oldest and biggest university of the state of Gujarat. In 1949, the University was incorporated under the Gujarat University Act of the State Government as a “teaching and affiliating” university. The Gujarat University is the largest university in the state, catering to the needs of higher education of more than two hundred thousand students scattered over 235 colleges, 15 recognized institutions and 24 approved institutions. It is the most preferred university among students for professional courses.
Gujarat University is an affiliating University at the under-graduate level, while it is a teaching one at the post-graduate level. The University is headquartered in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The campus at Ahmedabad consists of Schools of Sciences, Social Sciences, Rollwala Centre for Computer Science, and BK School of Management. Bachelor’s and Master’s courses are offered in Arts, Commerce, Law, Business Administration, Medicine, Engineering, and Philosophy. In addition, a variety of Diploma and Certificate courses are offered.
The University recognizes some of the most important institutions in the state. These include Gujarat Cancer & Research Institute, Institute of Medical Post-graduate Studies & Research, National Institute of Occupational Health, Sardar Patel Institute of Economics & Social Research, and Institute for Plasma Research.
Student Welfare Departments have been established for the benefit of the students. These include the Gujarat University Health Centre, Gujarat University Employment Bureau, James Reaney Canadian Study Centre, and Women’s Development Cell. The Internet Center at the University has a high speed broadband connection and twenty ThinClient Access Points with latest configuration. The university provides separate hostels for boys and girls.
