The Tezpur University is located in Napaam, about 15 km east of Tezpur, the capital of the Sonitpur District of Assam. It was established in 1994. The university offers courses and promotes research in areas which are of special and direct relevance to the region, especially in the emerging areas of Science and Technology.
Each academic program is so designed as to provide enough flexibility in the choice of courses that the students would like to take. All the students admitted to Tezpur University in programs other than PhD, are required to take one of the courses from a group of General Proficiency Courses. This includes Remedial English and courses of general nature offered by various departments from time to time. These courses are credit courses.
The University has five schools. These are School of Science and technology, School of Humanities & Social Sciences, School of Environment, School of Management Studies and School of Engineering. Both Bachelor’s and Master’s programs are offered in a variety of subjects. The School of Management Studies offers a full-time MBA.
The University is primarily a residential one. However, the students are also allowed to reside in their homes also. Presently, the university provides accommodation to its students in six hostels in the campus at Napaam. The Computer Centre on the campus is equipped with VSAT communication link to the ERNET hub at Bangalore, which provides high-speed Internet connectivity. All the departments get e-mail and Internet access through LAN. Medical facilities are available at the University campus.
