Gauhati University was established in the year 1948. It was the first University to be established in North East India. It has 194 affiliated colleges offering under-graduate and post-graduate courses in the fields of Arts, Science, Commerce, Law, Engineering and Medicine.
The University is located in Jalukbari, Assam. The campus has all the necessary civic amenities such as health services, water supply, street lighting, internal roads, post and telegraph office, a market, parks, and an auditorium. The University has four faculties in its residential campus- Arts, Commerce, Science and Law. Besides, the faculty of Medicine and the faculty of Engineering function within the constituent Gauhati Medical College and the Assam Engineering College respectively.
The university has faculty strength of 312 (full time) and 83 (part time). Fully equipped laboratory facilities have been provided in all the Science departments. The Central Library has over 400, 000 books, periodicals, and journals. Research Centers have also been established. These include Women's Study, NE Historical Studies, Aqua Culture, Population Research, and Folklore Research. The campus has 22 residential hostels both for boys and girls.
The UGC-Academic Staff College at the Gauhati University is one of the 51 similar colleges in the country established by the University Grants Commission. The purpose of this college is to provide continuous training to the teachers of the university and its constituent colleges, in order to update their knowledge and teach them the latest techniques. The Academic Staff run two special types of training programs- Orientation Programs and Refresher Courses.
