Assam University was established in 1994. It is located in Dargakona, about 20 kilometers from Silchar, a hill station in Assam. Drawing its 120 plus faculty from many disciplines from all over the country, the university sustains a multidisciplinary approach to higher education.
The University has eight schools in major disciplines. These include Social Sciences, Humanities, Languages, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Information Sciences, and Management Studies. The University has established a permanent campus with 24 Departments and 3 Interdisciplinary centers; these are the Computer Centre, Women's Study Centre and Netaji Subhash Bose Centre for Research and Studies in National Movement and National Integration.
The five districts under the jurisdiction of Assam University have 52 undergraduate colleges. As a teaching cum affiliating University, it has select colleges under its purview which include a Regional Engineering College, a Medical College, College of Law, and Teachers Training College. Besides Master’s Degree programs in a variety of subjects, the university offers integrated Degree and Master Degree programs (10 semesters) in Fine Arts, Computer Science and Social Work. There are also post-graduate diploma courses in Marketing Management and Journalism, and a certificate course in Functional Sanskrit. About 2000 students are on roll in various courses.
The University has gradually started attracting students from the neighboring states. The University is set to become a full-fledged residential University in the near future, creating a better environment for learning and research activities. For this purpose, hostel facilities for the students or research scholars have been made available from this year.
