University of Hyderabad is a premier institute of post-graduate teaching and research, established by an Act of the Parliament of India in 1974 as a Central University. The University is located about 20 kilometers from the city of Hyderabad, on the old Hyderabad-Bombay highway.
The Sarojini Naidu School is located at the Golden Threshold (the city campus of the university) premises. All other schools of the University are located on the main campus in Gachibowli. A Centre for Folk Culture Studies, established with financial support from the Ford Foundation also functions from the Golden Threshold.
The university offers master’s degree courses like M.A, M.Sc, M.C.A, M.Tech in various disciplines. Recently the University has decided to offer undergraduate courses as well. The various schools in the university are School of Mathematics, School of Physics, School of Chemistry, School of Life Sciences, School of Humanities, School of Social Sciences, Sarojini Naidu School of Performing Arts, and School of Management Studies. Recently, the university has introduced five specialized post-graduate programs under Distance Education. These courses are in the areas of Computer Science, Project Planning & Management, Environment Studies, Translation Studies and Human Rights. The admission announcement for these courses is normally released in October every year.
Of the total number of seats in the hostels, 22.5% are reserved for candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes, and 3% for physically challenged students. The university offers a large number of merit-cum-means scholarships for students. Most of these are available to postgraduate students. The Placement Cell helps students in securing good jobs in reputed multinational companies. |
