Osmania Medical College is a premier institution of medical sciences in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh. It is the oldest medical school in India, and one of the oldest in the world. The Osmania Medical College recently celebrated its 150th Anniversary.
Osmania is the only medical college in India where each medical specialty has a separate hospital of its own. It is the only medical college in South India to offer postgraduate courses in endocrinology. Apart from the MBBS course for undergraduates, the institution offers post graduate courses in many subjects. These include Anesthesia, Dermatology, Forensic Medicine, Microbiology, Pediatrics, Physiology, Preventive and Social Medicine, Anatomy, ENT, General Surgery, and Orthopedics. PG Diploma courses are also offered in some of these subjects. The institute has a total intake of 200 students every year.
A number of hospitals are associated with this medical college for teaching purposes. These are the Osmania General Hospital, Government Maternity Hospital, Niloufer Hospital, Sir Ronald Ross Institute of Tropical and Communicable Diseases, Mehdi Nawaz Jung Institute of Oncology, Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital, Government ENT Hospital, and The Institute of Mental Health, Errgadda.
The institute has a rich history. Sir Ronald Ross Institute of Tropical and Communicable Diseases is the place where Dr Ross was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for his pioneering research on the malaria parasite. His discoveries led to the breakthroughs in the treatment of malaria, saving countless lives. Osmania is also the place where the anesthetic properties of chloroform were first discovered. |
