Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), Hyderabad, is a University established under the Act of Andhra Pradesh State Legislature. Several courses have been organized under different disciplines at this institute. NIMS is recognized by University Grants Commission and Medical Council of India.
NIMS is located at the prime centre of the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. The institute was established with the objective of further developing the educational and research facilities in the field of medical sciences. The government also wanted to develop a pattern of teaching in post graduate level, including training in para-medical and allied fields. As a result of this, the institute was given the status of a University in 1989.
This institute extends its services through 27 Departments. Out of them, 14 are super and Broad Specialties, while others are Supporting Departments. The hospital has a total bed strength of 946 beds. An Ethical committee, which functions as per WHO and ICMR guidelines, has been formed for research projects. In addition, another committee is being formed for academic and service accountability, and for practicing ethical standards in medical care.
NIMS conducts 8 super specialty courses; the subjects are Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Nephrology, Plastic Surgery, Urology, and Chest & TB. Similarly, NIMS conducts 6 broad specialty courses in General Medicine, Pathology, Orthopedics, Anesthesiology, Radiology and Hospital Administration. For the benefit of paramedical students, 13 Post Graduate Diploma courses are conducted. Several training programs are also conducted for the doctors, nursing staff, paramedical staff and ministerial staff. |
