The Andhra Medical College is a prestigious centre of medical education in India. It is located in the city of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. The college continues to uphold the prestigious tradition of producing some of the finest young doctors.
The Medical College first started operations on 1st July, 1923, with a total strength of 32 students. The Medical College was formally inaugurated on 19th July, 1923, by the Honorable Diwan Bahadur Rajah Panuganti, Minister for Local Self Government Department, the then Chief Minister of Madras State and minister for health.
The first building of the Medical College housed the departments of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Anatomy and Physiology. By the year 1956, the number of admissions increased to 125 per year.
The Andhra Medical College is attached with many Government Teaching Hospitals in Visakhapatnam. These include The King George Hospital, Government Hospital For Mental Care, Rani Chandramani Devi (RCD) Hospital, and Government Hospital for Chest & Communicable Diseases. Deserving students at the Andhra Medical College can apply for the various scholarships awarded for the benefit of the students. These include the Pratibha Awards, National Merit Scholarships, State Merit Scholarships, and Backward Class/Scheduled Class Scholarships.
The Medical College provides separate hostels for men and women who are pursuing medical education at the college. There is a reading room and lending library in the hostel which can be used by the students residing at the Andhra Medical College hostels. The Central Library of the Medical College has a repository of more than 32,000 books and 107 journals. |
