Sushmita Sen was born on November 19, 1975 in Hyderabad, India, to Subhra and Wing Commander Shubeer Sen. Since Sushmita’s father was in the Air Force, she led a very nomadic life going from city to city wherever her father was transferred. However, her mother Subhra decided to move to Delhi so that the children could have some normalcy in their life and of course to have proper education. Sushmita has one brother, Rajeev, and a sister, Neelam.
In 1994 Sushmita decided to enter the Miss India beauty pageant. When she realized that Aishwarya Rai too would be entering for this pageant, she nearly withdrew her papers. However, her mother convinced her not to do so. So, Sushmita entered the competition and was the dark horse of the beauty pageant. She went on to win the Miss India title and represented in India in Miss Universe. She won the coveted Miss Universe title after answering the question about what is a woman’s essence. Sushmita Sen became the first Indian and Asian to win this title.
As is the norm with all beauty queens in India, Sushmita too joined Bollywood. Her first film was Dastak where she plays a Miss Universe who is being stalked by a psychotic fan. This film was a box office disaster and so was her next film Zor. Sushmita started getting publicity for other things rather than her acting. Her affairs, her diva-like behavior and her breast enhancement surgery were news items. Through this all, Sushmita still managed to win the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Biwi No. 1 in 1999.
However, Sushmita first film was not in Bollywood. Her first film was in Tamil titled Ratchakan which failed to do well in the box office. Sushmita’s biggest hit todate has been the 2004 film Main Hoon Na in which she stars opposite Shahrukh Khan. She has also acted opposite Ajay Devgan, Kajol’s husband, in Main Aisa Hi Hoon. Sushmita is also acting opposite Naomi Campbell in a film entitled Karma Confessions and Holi. The film is a humorous take on the Indian communities living in America and their relationships with Americans.
In June 2000, Sushmita adopted a daughter named Renee. According to interview, Sushmita says that she has her priorities in place. Her first priority is her daughter Renee followed by her parents and then comes everything else.
