Raima Sen, born on November 11, 1979, is the daughter of Moon Moon Sen, a Bollywood actress of yesteryears, and the granddaughter of legendary actress, Suchitra Sen. Raima’s father, Bharat Dev Varma, is from the royal family of Tirupur. Raima’s paternal grandmother, Ila Devi, was the princess of Cooch Behar. Ila Devi’s sister, Gayatri Devi, is the Maharani of Jaipur. Raima has a younger sister, Riya, who is also into acting in Bollywood. Raima, who bears an uncanny resemblance to her grandmother, is often called upon on public events to portray Suchitra Sen. Raima has an undergraduate degree in English.

Raima made her debut into Bollywood with the film Godmother. The film was critically acclaimed. However, Raima’s role was overlooked due to Shabana Azmi’s role and acting. She acted in this film just before her twelfth grade exams. She then proceeded to act in Daman as Raveena Tandon’s daughter. Here, Raima’s performance received a lot of appreciation.

However, the role that opened doorways for Raima was Rituparno Ghosh’s film Choker Bali. Raima won a lot of praise and accolades for her role as the simple and submissive Ashalata in Choker Bali. However, Raima could not keep the moment going. She did a few average films like Fun2shh – Dudes in the 10th Century and 99.9 FM before grapping a role in Parineeta in 2005. She received a lot of critical acclaim for her acting and the film was a major commercial success.

From here, Raima went on to act in the hit action thriller Dus and a highly successful Bengali film Antar Mahal. Raima has two movies slated for release in 2006. One is a Hindi film, Eklavya – The Royal Guard, the other is a Bengali film, Anuranon. Eklavya has a huge starcast and Raima got an opportunity to work with the best. The movie has Amitabh Bachchan, Sharmila Tagore, Sanjay Dutt, Saif Ali Khan, Vidya Balan, Jackie Shroff, Jimmy Shergill and Boman Irani. Anuranon, which means resonance in Bengali, stars Rahul Bose, Raima Sen and Rituparna Sengupta.

In 2007, Sunglass will be released. Raima shares the screen with Konkona Sen Sharma and R Madhavan. This is a Rituparno Ghosh film and it is about extra marital affairs.

Along with acting, Raima is successfully juggling a modeling career, having done ads for Cadbury India and Lakme. After doing cameos in Chokher Bali, Parineeta and Antar Mahal, Raima has decided not to do anymore cameos for sometime. She is now looking to act in films where her character has importance.
