Priyanka Chopra was born July 18, 1982 in Jamshedpur in the state of Jharkhand, India. She is the first born child of Capt Dr Ashok Chopra and Dr Madhu Chopra. She has a younger brother. Having been brought up in an Army family, Priyanka spent her initial years all over India – from North to South and East to West; wherever her father was transferred.
Priyanka had her initial schooling in La Martiniere Girls College in Lucknow as a
resident student. From there she moved to Maria Goretti College in Bareilly to prepare herself for studies in the US. Priyanka completed her tenth grade from Boston, USA. Priyanka aspired to become a Software Engineer or a Criminal Psychologist. However, life had other plans for her.
In 2000 Priyanka won the Miss India pageant and then she went on to represent India in Miss World beauty pageant. Priyanka won the Miss World title in 2000. After winning the Miss World title, Priyanka moved toward acting. Her first film was a Tamil film in 2000 titled Thamizhan. From there, Priyanka went on to act in a number of successful Bollywood movies like Andaaz in 2003, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi and Aitraaz in 2004 and Waqt: The Race Against Time and Bluffmaster in 2005. In 2006, Krrish was released which was huge success in the block office followed by Don in October 2006.
Priyanka has won two Filmfare Awards till date. In 2003, she won the Filmfare Award for the best debut for her role in Andaaz. While in 2004, she won the award for the Best Villian for her portrayal in Aitraaz. She was also nominated for the Best Supporting Actress award for her role in Aitraaz.
Priyanka enjoys writing poetry and singing, a gift inherited from her father. Priyanka started performing in musical shows at a tender age of three along with her father and uncle. She is the only Indian in the US who has been selected at state level for the National Opus Honor Choir.
Besides acting, Priyanka spends a lot of time doing charity work in India and the US. She has joined CAF and CII in their literacy program and is their ambassador. She is a member of a support group for thalassaemic children in Uttar Pradesh, India. Priyanka has participated in adult education awareness program with NGOs in Bareilly. She also volunteered and joined Government of India sponsored Polio Eradication Program. Priyanka has helped raise funds for destitutes in Boston, USA.
