Mamta Kulkarni, formerly an actress in the Hindi film industry, rose to notoriety when she posed topless with her arms covering the upper half of her body in the cover of the magazine Stardust, in September 1993. this raised a furor among the conservative religious sectors of the community. She was even charged with obscenity by the law. The forthright, fiery lady punted the critics by calling them charlatans.

However in 2000, she was fined a sum of Es. 15,000/-. To evade inquisitive journalists and paparazzi, she attended her court hearing wearing a burqua, thus giving rise to further outcry from the Muslim community.

Mamta Kulkarni debuted with the Hindi film Tiranga in 1992. In 1993 she won Filmfare Lux New Face Award for her work in Saif Ali Khan starrer Aashiq. She acted opposite Bollywood biggies like Salman Khan in Karan Arjun, Amir Khan in Baazi and Akshay Kumar in Sabse Bada Kiladi, all of which were resounding hits. However, she never received any substantial role and was always included to increase the glamour quotient. She acted in several films, but she never quite made it to the top despite her voluptuous beauty. Supposedly, it was her candid behavior that alienated her colleagues. They jeered at her Marathi accent. A lot of murky allegations and counter-accusations splashed over the pages of the tabloids that reported her catfights with other actresses. 

Controversy never left her side. She was allegedly paid a huge remuneration for performing at a private party given by a legislator from Bihar, who was later found to be involved in the Fodder Scam case. Mamta was questioned by the police but she denied any awareness of the legislator’s past history.
A fracas with Rajkmar Santoshi tolled the death knell of her acting career. She now resides in New York City.
