Lisa Ray was born on April 4, 1972 in Toronto, Canada. She is of Indian / Polish descent. Her mother is Polish while her father is a Bengali from India. Lisa finished her schooling in Canada and wanted to do journalism in University. However, a famous and celebrated fashion magazine approached her and she ended up on the magazine’s cover page.
This is how Lisa’s tryst with acting started. This cover page got Lisa instant fame and recognition. Many directors and producers approached her but Lisa rebuffed all offers until Kasoor in 2001. In 2002 she acted in a light hearted romantic comedy called Bollywood/Hollywood which went on to be a success in Canada.
Before starting out in Bollywood, Lisa first acted in a music videos. She did a music video for the famous Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan entitled Afreen, Afreen. She has also hosted a movie show on Star Movies with Kelly Dorjee called Star Buzz. She has acted in music video for Daler Mehendi where she is the pillon rider on a motorcycle.
Since taking up acting, Lisa has acted in number of films like Arrangement in 2004 and Water in 2005. After acting in a few films Lisa moved to London learn acting. She enrolled herself in the Academy of Live and Recorded Arts. She recently graduated from the academy and then worked in Seeking Fear.
A few South Indian producers and directors have convinced her to act in South Indian films. Lisa is an avid writer and hopes to become a novelist someday. She has contributed a number of articles to Cosmopolitan and The Indian Express.
Lisa is acting in author Shamim Sharif’s film I Can’t Think Straight, which is based on the writer’s autobiographical book. The film is about two women lovers. Lisa plays this film along with Sheetal Sheth who is US born. Bollywood cinematographer Aseem Bajaj who shot to fame with Chameli is Director of Photography for this film. The film was shot in London and Oxford in 32 days.
As time goes by, Lisa has shown less interest in acting in Bollywood and has gradually moved toward Hollywood. She has been associated with a number of international film makers. Her new film release in 2006 have won critical acclaim. They are Quarter Life Crisis and A Stone’s Throw. With her svelte figure and gorgeous looks Lisa looks ready to take on Hollywood with storm. |
